    Adolescents’ perceptions of digital media’s potential to elicit jealousy, conflict and monitoring behaviors within romantic relationships

    Understanding the role of digital media in adolescents’ romantic relationships is essential to the prevention of digital dating violence. This study focuses on adolescents’ perceptions of the impact of digital media on jealousy, conflict, and control within their romantic relationships. Twelve focus group interviews were conducted, among 55 secondary school students (ngirls = 28; 51% girls) between the ages of 15 and 18 years (Mage = 16.60 years; SD age = 1.21), in the Dutch-speaking community of Belgium. The respondents identified several sources of jealousy within their romantic relationships, such as online pictures of the romantic partner with others and online messaging with others. Adolescents identified several ways in which romantic partners would react when experiencing feelings of jealousy, such as contacting the person they saw as a threat or looking up the other person’s social media profiles. Along with feelings of jealousy, respondents described several monitoring behaviors, such as reading each other’s e-mails or accessing each other’s social media accounts. Adolescents also articulated several ways that they curated their social media to avoid conflict and jealousy within their romantic relationships. For instance, they adapted their social media behavior by avoiding the posting of certain pictures, or by ceasing to comment on certain content of others. The discussion section includes suggestions for future research and implications for practice, such as the need to incorporate information about e-safety into sexual and relational education and the need to have discussions with adolescents, about healthy boundaries for communication within their friendships and romantic relationships.</jats:p

    Removing the hidden data dependency of DIA with predicted spectral libraries

    Data‐independent acquisition (DIA) generates comprehensive yet complex mass spectrometric data, which imposes the use of data‐dependent acquisition (DDA) libraries for deep peptide‐centric detection. Here, it is shown that DIA can be redeemed from this dependency by combining predicted fragment intensities and retention times with narrow window DIA. This eliminates variation in library building and omits stochastic sampling, finally making the DIA workflow fully deterministic. Especially for clinical proteomics, this has the potential to facilitate inter‐laboratory comparison

    Tardiphagia robiniae gen. nov., sp. nov., a new genus in the family Bradyrhizobiaceae isolated from Robinia pseudoacacia in Flanders (Belgium)

    Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from Robinia pseudoacacia root nodules. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, they are closely related to Bradyrhizobium, Rhodopseudomonas and Nitrobacter species (97% sequence similarity), belonging to the class Alphaproteobacteria and family Bradyrhizobiaceae. The results of physiological and biochemical tests together with sequence analysis of housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, gyrB, recA and rpoB) allowed differentiation of this group from other validly published Bradyrhizobiaceae genera. NodA, nodC and nifH genes could not be amplified. On the basis of genotypic and phenotypic data, these organisms represent a novel genus and species for which the name Tardiphaga robiniae gen. nov., sp. nov. (LMG 26467T=CCUG 61473T), is proposed

    Development of a needs assessment instrument for couples planning a pregnancy

    Purpose: In Europe, preconception care is growing momentum. Nevertheless, it is often not optimized and tailored to the needs of couples planning a pregnancy. To date no instrument is available to assess the actual needs of these people in terms of preconception care. The aim of this research was to develop and validate an instrument to assess the needs of men and women planning a pregnancy. Methods: Based on a literature review and the felt need approach, a needs assessment instrument was developed. A Delphi method with a group of experts (n= 12) and patients (n= 14) was used to test the validity and reliability of the instrument. Results: A validated instrument was developed to assess (1) the needs of couples planning a pregnancy, (2) whether the current preconception care is tailored to the needs of these people, (3) which preferences couples have in terms of the organisation of preconception care, and (4) whether the needs are associated with patient characteristics. The needs assessment instrument consists of four parts with a total of 57 items: demographic factors (eight items), organisation of preconception care (five items), information needs (30 items) and needs for specialized counseling (14 items). Conclusions: A needs assessment instrument was developed and validated to assess the needs of couples planning a pregnancy. This instrument will be pilot tested in 2012 - 2013 and will hereinafter be available to assess and tailor preconception care on large scale

    In vitro prebiotic potential of agricultural by-products on intestinal fermentation, gut barrier and inflammatory status of piglets

    The inclusion of fibre-rich ingredients in diets is one possible strategy to enhance intestinal fermentation and positively impact gut ecology, barrier and immunity. Nowadays, inulin-type fructans are used as prebiotics in the feed of piglets to manipulate gut ecology for health purposes. Likewise, some by-products could be considered as sustainable and inexpensive ingredients to reduce gut disorders at weaning. In the present study, chicory root and pulp, citrus pulp, rye bran and soya hulls were tested in a three-step in vitro model of the piglet's gastro-intestinal tract combining a pepsin-pancreatin hydrolysis (digestion), a dialysis step using cellulose membranes (absorption) and a colonic batch fermentation (fermentation). The fermentation kinetics, SCFA and microbiota profiles in the fermentation broth were assessed as indicators of prebiotic activity and compared with the ones of inulin. The immunomodulatory effects of fermentation supernatant (FS) were investigated in cultured intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) by high-throughput quantitative PCR. Chicory root displayed a rapid and extensive fermentation and induced the second highest butyrate ratio after inulin. Citrus pulp demonstrated high acetate ratios and induced elevated Clostridium clusters IV and XIVa levels. Chicory root and pulp FS promoted the intestinal barrier integrity with up-regulated tight and adherens junction gene expressions in comparison with inulin FS. Chicory pulp FS exerted anti-inflammatory effects in cultured IPEC-J2. The novel approach combining an in vitro fermentation model with IPEC-J2 cells highlighted that both chicory root and pulp appear to be promising ingredients and should be considered to promote intestinal health at weaning. © The Authors 2019
